Providing A Safe Workplace

1. Safety Isn’t Easy

Applying safety in the workplace must not be understood as something easy to accomplish. Many managers, who are unfamiliar with managing safety, assume a safe workplace can occur overnight. In most companies with successful safety programs, their success is normally built upon 3 to 5 years of planning, hard work and continuous improvement. On the other hand, it requires little to no effort to develop a workplace that is disorderly and/or jeopardizes the safety of employees.  As stated in the second law of thermodynamics, disorder in the universe is always increasing. Therefore, an unsafe workplace is inevitable, so countermeasures must be applied to avoid “inevitable” tragedies.

Establishing a safe or unsafe workplace under IBS is first explained in terms of making a right or wrong decision. In either case, the chosen decision/goal of safe or unsafe [right or wrong] is provided with the resources and the consequences to support its intent, as explained in the Quran; Allah says:

“If any do wish for the transitory things (of this life) We readily grant them--such things as We will to such persons as We will: in the end have We provided Hell for them: they will burn therein disgraced and rejected.  Those who do wish for the (things of) the Hereafter and strive therefore with all due striving and have Faith they are the ones whose striving is acceptable (to Allah).” Al-Israa 17: 18-19

Therefore, if a Muslim owned company operated its business against the principles of Islam, it will find its benefits to be short lived and, most importantly, without the embodiment of Ibadah. Without Ibadah, the Muslim’s action is transitory, a deviation from his true nature and of no value to him in the Hereafter.

Secondly, a further illustration showing the difficulties in creating a safe workplace is depicted in comparison to our human behavior (Figure 2). On one side are human actions that require no effort to obtain transitory/worldly rewards (Unsafe/Hell), and on the other side are actions that require much effort for non-transitory/eternal rewards (Safe/Heaven).

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the Hell-Fire is surrounded by temptations.” Muslim

Obtaining a safe workplace [or Heaven, for that matter,] requires a tremendous amount of effort and work to incline toward what is virtuous and good. On the other hand, it is easy for a person to succumb to temptation, as it requires no effort or any form of resistance or work. Similarly, an unsafe workplace requires no effort.
