Measuring
Employee Safety Performance
1.
Behavior Audits
The
leading safety approach to-date for preventing workplace injuries is
Behavior-Based Safety. The central notion of this technique is to identify and
correct unsafe acts committed by an employee, which are attributed to 80 – 94
percent of workplace injuries. This technique has basically four (4) components:
(1) Observing the critical behavior of employees; (2) Talking to the employee
about the observed behavior; (3) Recording of observation data; and, (4)
Analysis the data for system improvements.
In
Islam, a Muslim knows his thoughts, words and actions are being constantly
observed and recorded down by Allah’s angels. One
angel sits on the person’s right side (writing good deeds) and one on the left
side (writing bad deeds). Each person is ultimately responsible to ensure that
his good deeds outweigh his bad deeds on the Day of Judgement.

Behold two (guardian angels) appointed to learn (his
doings) learn (and note them) one sitting on the right and one on the left. Qaf
50:17

Then those who balance (of good deeds) is heavy they will
attain salvation: But those who balance is light will be those who have lost
their souls; in Hell will they abide. Al-Muninun
23: 102-103

From an IBS
perspective, a similar approach is recommended in recording a person’s actions
(behaviors) in the workplace. IBS gives equal value to obtaining what the person
has done [good] for safety, rather than focusing strictly on a person’s unsafe
acts. A person’s contribution to safety may not be evident at the time of
observation, as his apparent unsafe act. So, the observer must ascertain this
information during his contact. By incorporating the “what have you done
[good] for safety” question during the contact, the bad as well as the good
acts are recorded and weighed together to determine the Safe Behavior Factor.
