Management
Commitment
1.
Listening
to Employees
In
all effective safety management systems such as Dupont’s, Alcola's, DNV’s,
NASA's and OSHA’s
VPP Star Program, employee involvement is a standing program element. Having
employees involved is a vital part of the safety program to ensure that
management is informed on what is affecting employees (positively and
negatively) at the working level. Under IBS, there is a strong relationship
between the [Islamic] success and failure of a company based upon management
ignoring or acting upon employees’ concerns.

The Prophet said, “The example of the person abiding by Allah’s order
and restrictions in comparison to those who violate them is like the example of
those persons who drew lots for their seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in
the upper part, and the others in the lower. When the latter needed water, they
had to go up to bring water (and that troubled the others), so they said, ‘Let
us make a hole in our share of the ship (and get water) saving those who are
above us from troubling them.’ So, if the people in the upper part left the
others do what they had suggested, all the people of the ship would be
destroyed, but if they prevented them, both parties would be safe.” Bukhari

Listening
to one’s employees is a form of true management leadership and commitment. The
role of management to provide a safe work place should not exist in a vacuum.
IBS explains that there must be an active and working trust between management
(those in the upper part of the boat) and employees (those in the lower part of
the boat) in order for the company (boat) to stay afloat.

Verily, Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those to
whom they are due. An-Nisa 4:58
