Employee Involvement
1.
Empowerment
Many
companies who have successful safety programs have found that empowering
employees with safety (caring) principles inculcates safety as a value in
all of them. One such principle could read: An employee is required to
discontinue any work activity that could injury him or other employees. Allowing
an employee to stop any work that could jeopardize the safety of others or
himself puts the decision making process at the shop floor, where it should be,
and not at the top floor. This empowerment role of employees [people], be it to
change a situation physically or speak against it verbally, was encouraged by
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):
 |
“If any
of you sees something objectionable: (1) he should change it with his hand, but
if he cannot; (2) he should change it with his tongue, and if he cannot; (3) he
should do it in his heart, that being the weakest form of faith.” Muslim

It
has been proven over the years that empowerment works for quality and customer
service. Likewise from an IBS perspective, this statement of empowerment from
the Prophet (PBUH) must be a principle part of the Muslim managers’ philosophy
and company safety policy, as it goes hand and hand with listening to those at
the bottom of the company (boat).
